Ruling on giving FIDYAH for missed fasts of dead person.

Ruling on giving FIDYAH for missed fasts of dead person.

Salam-o-Alaikum,
Respected Sheikh, my question is should FIDYAH (penalty for not fasting) be paid on behalf of a dead person who didn’t fast for many years? If yes then what is the ruling if the number of years she didn’t fast is not known?
Detail of question is my that my mother didn’t fast for an unknown number of years due to negligence & because she was disabled to some extent from a long time but she could be able to fast in that condition.

Answer

Wa Alaykum Salaam
For the time when your mother was not well and unable to fast, no Fidyah is required for the fasts that were missed during this period.
As far as the remaining fasts which were not done, you will only be obliged to give Fidyah if your mother made a bequest for this. If she did not make a bequest, then in that case it would be optional for you to give Fidyah on her behalf.
The Fidyah to be given is equal to Sadaqatul Fitr for each day of fast. You should estimate, to the best of your ability, the number of days of Fard fasts that were missed.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best.
